Loy Krathong has its roots in an ancient Brahmin festival dedicated to honoring water spirits. In Thailand, the festival underwent adaptations to include reverence for Buddha.
Crafted from the stem or trunk of a banana tree, a traditional krathong is adorned with banana leaves and flowers. Prior to releasing it into the nearby water, incense sticks, and candles are carefully inserted and lit within the krathong. Participants then offer a silent wish or prayer before gently placing the krathong on the water’s surface. As part of the Loy Krathong tradition, individuals may include a clipping of their fingernails or a strand of hair along with a coin in the krathong, symbolizing respect for river spirits, particularly the water goddess, Phra Mae Khongkha.
